an thing that happens on kchung radio sometimes...

me (jk) + lunch skirt + sometimes occasional guests, happily sandwiched between 2 of my fave spots on 1630 AM.

it features sounds from our, both our mouths, + selected and/or random audio recordings, and sometimes lunch skirt reads things, and alsooo we sometimes have guests.

the title "sooooooo..." is built on the show we sub for called "noooooooooooooooo".

altogether, it's an rather exploration in awkward convo, with (somewhat) intentional over-usage of :(and, but, um, hmmm, and, yeah but no, and of course 'so', etc.)...

alsoooooo, lunch often prods me to just play the next track.

Set in fashion magazine format, Spanish Silver Fox offers an extensive view into Los Angeles based artist Guan Rong's vision of her ideal husband.

In this production, an in-depth interview conducted by artist Brian Getnick acts as a guide through glossy pages of glamorously stylized work by photographers Patricia Castaneda and Morgan Yu.

Reality and fantasy merge herein to create what can easily be read as a physical dating site profile of the artist, an appropriate conceptual platform for her views on love, life, and desire.

...sometimes it takes a crew large enough to fill an odd communal household to raise a full-color, conceptual, husband-hunting, fashion magazine.

the launch party was the icing, thanks to women's center for creative work.

a totally taser roving book fair + reading / performance series that recently went down here in los angeles.

i was only able to catch 2 of the multiple events at a number of rad venues. during some words about birds at insert blanc, i grabbed this (above) not quite murder, yet conveniently timed gang of crows tearing up the air.

constantly forgetting my tripping out on the atm's, i didn't immediately score as much take away as i wished. regardless, amongst other items, managed to pick up this collection from eohippus labs, and mr. unnamed press tossed me a frisbee.

managed to snag this exhausted copy from emji spero after what seemed like an hour long toothbrushing performance reading at poetic research bureau... my bag still carries the odor of sensodyne.

(handed it over to lunch skirt to rest aside some ketchup'd pages from a performance by lindsey boldt)

also, a reading of this piece from CARLA led to a brief but terrif discussion on cying, and my own personal "cry list" exploration.

taser blasts 2015: : ... sound making performances,

i don't make it out for events nearly as much as i'd like. for a number of reasons. when i do, i always note the ones that made it everything or more...

1 (part 1) - Jacques Demierre and Urs Leimgruber @ artshare (LA).

it's been too long since i've witnessed such powerfully great players connect so perfectly to one another, and the audience ear. 

barre phillips, the performer i was most familiar with, was unable to make this a trio due to illness.

however, following a taserly reinforced and effected harp adventure with shelley burgon, a montage video of phillips moments made for a terrific lead-in to the performance.

Things like the recent death of Ray Manzarek, the Source Family documentary, and other events ended me up in a spree of watching old episodes of Dragnet...especially episodes that involve sub-culture.

From the ridiculous and improbable situations, to the amped-up lingo, all filtered through white bread, it holds a bounty of commentary, ready for harvest and reinterpretation.

Never been much of a fan of The Doors (think Love kinda conquered that territory in a better fashion), but Mr. Manzarek was a true taser master. Something I heard him say in an interview, kinda zapped me. I'm not gonna repeat it here

a taser video project by artist sarah mackenzie smith. brief, but a lot to read into. plus, looks like it was fun to make.

 since i can't embed the video, i just made the text real big...there are also some nice referential lines i can draw, but won't.

experimental bed-making

the experimental bed-making book... an oldie but goodie! this beauty was brought to life several years ago by the collaborative efforts of goatmother industries, j. shelley (smallkit) harrison, and william winchester claytor, but saw a second run a few months back here in LA. 

i had the honor of helping out with the binding of the 2nd book, which i believe is now in the loving claws of some angelino.

this came to my attention not so long ago, but yes...caviar vending machines!

burst up!...Piñata. a fine gallery in echo park.

about: Piñata is a project/retail space, cultivating the collaboration of arts, fashion, media and design through limited-run releases, exhibits and events. 

about (via me): Piñata is absolutely terrific. it held it's first opening the very same day i moved in to my new place, which is rather across the street. that initial exhibit featured a familiar entity...hassla books. thrilled. yes. there. i found an intimate space attractively lined with original works by a few favorites and some new now favorites (including an amazing piece by andrea longacre-white, which i still can't cross off my "must have" list).

after a tasered up performance by brendan fowler a few weeks later (rad), Piñata opened it's new show: University. by Seth Kinmont. the ol' 2 show test is complete, and this is officially taser factory. mr. Kinmont's work is a smart and great follow-up that proves Piñata knows how to shift gears in a forward style.

Caked Up – the tasteful art of Kate Steffens

Kate is great. As is her whole damn family! Kate’s thing is cakes, and other sweets. She’s a pro at making them for both mouth and eye action...not eye action like you put the food in your eye, but rather the food is great to look at with your eye, then put in mouth.

Ms. Steffens folds in a variety of artistic direction. Among these, her application of musically motivated imagery seems to stand out most in my mind(s).

 Disraeli Gears gets the Straight Outta Chocolate treatment

From Fela Kuti to the Cure, she recreates album covers and other related imagery, and emblazons them onto this magic mouth/eye art. Powered with a mix of ingredients as eclectic as her influences, Kate makes great cake!

I’m not a fan of sweets...or at least I wasn’t before getting my mouth blown off by a few of these creations. I’ve since been lucky enough to happen upon her cakes and treats at openings and other events, and I’ve happily made the “I don’ t really like sweets, but...” exception, time after time.

It’s a really fun visual and mouth attacking experience she puts on the table, so view more at her blog “Straight Outta Chocolate”, which is an absolutely amazing title. And you know how I feel about titles for things...or if you don’t, you will.

Trust me on the sweets, and if you’re into hearing some of the stars featured in her work, keep an eye out for her DJing efforts here locally (that means Los Angeles) as “Lady Kate”.

Plywood Curtains by Jennifer Bolande

I generally like Jennifer Bolande's art work. While the past few years, at least what i've seen, has kinda been on the hit or miss tip for me, I'm always drawn in by her conceptual directions. Love it. Taser F'in Factory. Perfect example is her site-specific Plywood Curtain installations around Los Angeles...Mainly utilizing unused commercial property...I can say as much about the effect as i can about the implied layers of concept, etc. They're beautiful. and apparently will be on view until sometime next year....I spotted the installation at the ICON, and decided to hit up the art reserve site for these images. thanks art reserve...

2 notes about preparing things and readymade art...

i spend a great amount of time walking (with my feet). it's a good chance to put things on top of other things, or at least see things that are perfect for things to be put on top of, find things that are perfectly centered for one's own appreciation without the need of things put on top of it.

aliens of the devil- a short informative video

as a part of the Not Ugly - Inner Beauty Pageant (part II), we presented, or did our best to present this brief video about aliens of the devil...remember...the band doesn't make any sound?! anyway, it's now online, and probably much easier to access than thru our technical difficulties the other nite. maybe and/or sorry! twas fun! and everybody involved with the event is entirely the best! and here it is...

circa. (yeay! i CAN read!)

circa. (yes, that is a dot...so say: “circa dot”) is a new taser factory effort, in the form of a light publication, by editor jonathan jay and creative director gwyn galvan. I particularly like the their initials: jj and gg., and if we hung out more, i think i would try just calling them jj and gg....
so far, circa. has featured interesting interviews of persons involved in interesting things in the los angeles area, specifically central los angeles. the cast of featured artists, sound-makers, writers, and poets are pretty substantial, and the interviews are quality. Ranging from playful-to-honest, traditional-to-experimental in their approach, it makes for fun reading.
(knee shy) had the pleasure of being spotlighted in the debut issue. now on their second release, featuring such creatives as: published poet chiwan choi, yyy’s / krs recording artist imaad wasif w/ truman water, lino-cut master dave lefner, and matador rec. heavies jaguar love, it’s evident that jj and gg are really starting to have fun with this.

along with breaking up standard monotony with their layout, circa. is also experimenting with means of distributing their product to the masses. circa. is currently available with the confines of los angeles...at select locations. if you’re interested in acquiring a hard-copy, contact them here:

public art...what isn't...

i've been better about carrying a camera with me when i go out. that is good, due to the amount of stuff outside. like this. oh street art...

a ripped out parking sign, which someone spraypainted, scraped, covered in sequins and wire, and threw in a street .a crosswalk sign that someone taped off to make this classic gesture. this was right in front of the office where i had an interview today.

serious as a cart attack...

I have developed a recent fascination with the array of carts in employed by thy neighborhood street people. Here are few photos. I am still building my collection, but i am amazing at leaving my camera at home when i go out, so it’s taking a while. I like these though. There was an amazing cart out today. However, the owner was hanging out next to it. I have never talked to him before, and i didn’t have time to stop and chat. I didn’t want to make things uncomfortable or come off like the dumb-ass white kid I never wanted be.i haven't had the chance to check around the internet for photo's from others, but i'm sure there are some pretty taser factory things out there. i did find some stuff one this site. lower down on the page there is a really great designed cart! check it out here!

(knee shy) is a fun-loving art duo, and recent addition to the bulging rolodex of the Los Angeles art community. With their upcoming installation piece, “the sound of wall”, they plan to display their penchant for inclusive playfulness, as well as their love of the strange and beautiful.

The piece itself is essentially a large wall mounted string instrument to which most standard technical titles both do and do not apply. The 7 section unit contains in total 111 strings, some strung properly and others prepared with a variety of objects. The object is amplified both electrically and naturally, and fills the roll of several traditional instrument variants.

Guests are welcome to interact with the piece. For the opening of the installation, (knee shy) will also perform a sound piece composed specifically for the piece in it’s current tuning. It’s sure to be full of 4 handed plucking, bowing, string piano, and other extended technique action.

The opening event for the piece is set for Friday February 5th. Along with the scheduled performance, sounds will be spun by: Lone Horn (aaron from the Horns of Happiness) and the Origami Vinyl crew. “the sound of wall” will be on exhibition and playable at Origami Vinyl from February 5th until April 5th, during normal store hours.

"a minute to pray, a second to die" by: chris d.

chris d. is known in the sound realm for his work singing for late 70's los angeles punk rock unit "the flesh eaters" (which also harnessed the skills of other l.a. players then making their initial markings), and later "the divine horsemen". "a minute to pray, a second to die" (the title of a flesh eaters album) is a deep collection of writing which spans his career from there to here.
the 30 or so years encapsulated in this text easily blasts holes through the mind, in a slow motion scene with strobing lights. it's a dream journal or life written as a dream journal and a clue-in to the systemic cinematic infection that has been the furnace for so much of this man's career. there is technique to his madness.
death ballad scrapings and an outlaw director's view-finder. pulp + noir. doesn't put your mind at easy.i went to his reading late last year. it was indeed taser factory. mary waronov read as well which was also incredible as hell.
