It’s almost time to say thanks here in the states by means of eating alotta food, and talking about the food, and talking to people that one might not talk to that often...like family, if you have one...

But before you soak into some weird-ass food coma, join (knee shy) for a splendid evening of fun,
dancing, and generally getting free, at our upcoming show “entrance(d)”

Entrance(d) , our latest venture, is a one night only event and installation...we can easily refer to it
as a curated party...so let’s.

On the evening of Saturday, November 20th, you can find (knee shy) in full form and dressed to
the dimes at Echo Park’s DIY Gallery...and we won’t be alone...
We’ve joined leagues with spectacular sound purveyors Tres Lingerie and BT Magnum to set the
night up/off right with their premier dance motivations.

The installation and dancing are free, and there is a cash bar, and other art in store...this is
looking like a winner. Come see for yrselves....

(knee shy), the Los Angeles based art duo of J. Shelley Harrison and Jeremy Kennedy, has
a definite penchant for the conceptual, the playful, and the interactive. Since 2006 they have
applied these working guides to subjects as unlikely and varied as atonal music composition and
parallel parking. With the their newest work, an installation titled “Entrance(d)”, the team holds
true to all of the above.

“Entrance(d)” is a one-time event, which rings more like a curated party than a standard art
opening. With a focus on dance parties and epic times, (knee shy)’s multi-faceted installation
aspires to create an atmosphere of open fun on the evening of November 20th at Echo Park’s DIY
Gallery.

The physical installation will sprawl in minimal and maximal pockets throughout the space
provided by DIY Gallery. The set-up will be accessible to the audience, and is built for interaction,

with elements such as photo ops complete with on-site, party soldiering photographers.

To thoroughly carry the theme through the evening, they’ve collaborated with Bay Area boogie/
disco funk DJ duo Tres Lingerie, and L.A.’s BT Magnum (of Beat Electric/Mezzanine fame) to
provide a fitting backdrop of sound.

As with many of their prior projects, the audience is intended to be as much a part of the piece as
any element designed by the artist. (knee shy) will be setting an inclusive stage for the practice
of chance theory, and extends an open invitation for those inclined to present a fashion forward
response to any dance and/or party spirit that calls to them.

With that in mind, it’s up to the crowd to complete the scene, and shape this style eccentric
installation.

About (knee shy):

(knee shy) is the chosen moniker for the collaborative artwork of L.A. based artists J. Shelley Harrison and Jeremy
Kennedy. Work as a duo began in early 2006. Kennedy and Harrison chose to work together after examining the
similarities in their own personal working techniques, activities, and especially, their shared concepts and ideas.

The goal of this collaboration has always been to actively combine brainstorms, and use whatever means, or medium,
necessary to actualize them. In other words, they hold the concept as the center of attention. With this in mind, (knee
shy)’s artwork manifests itself in many forms.

Both artists have maintained solo careers, which expand into the musical arena. Harrison performs and records with the
experimental prog-pop band Horns of Happiness (Secretly Canadian Records), while Kennedy has been involved in a
number of groups ranging from punk rock to free jazz. He now pilots the FMSMPRC micro-label.

Whether it be 2-dimensional, performance, sculptural, a themed party, in a gallery, or site specific; this duo always has
a focus of playfulness and/or interaction. (knee shy) is especially interested in public art, art actions, and other means of
connecting art and audience.

About Tres Lingerie:

Originally a bi-coastal production and DJ duo fostered over the Internet between NYC and SF natives Johan Churchill
(French house music enthusiast) and Jordan Presnick (former punk rocker), Tres Lingerie recently reunited in the east
bay.

Jordan and Johan both attended Sarah Lawrence College where they participated in all the offerings of a fine liberal arts
education, which included access to a well-stocked electronic music studio. Like teenagers raiding their parents liquor
cabinet, Jordan and Johan became intoxicated with digital and analog synthesis and raided the infinite cool sounds from a
plethora of vintage and new high-end gear.

Now, in their own studio (Unrbanoculars) in Berkeley, the boys are busy tapping into those funky, fresh, old, and timeless
disco and soul sounds pioneered during the late 70's and 80's.

The man behind the excellent events curated at (San Francisco’s) (arguably) best dance venue,
Mezzanine, and the Internet's go-to blog for old-school dance jams is one Brian Tarney. Party goers and
vintage-tune seekers may know him better as BT Magnum, Tarney's alter-ego, who runs about S.F. DJing
some of the best classic house, disco, and boogie parties, and writes regularly for Beat Electric. BT is a
veritable vault of knowledge when it comes to the smooth grooves and stellar tracks of the '80s, but he also
continues to keep a finger on the pulse of contemporary music that's inspired by those same sounds.

(knee shy) is a fun-loving art duo, and recent addition to the bulging rolodex of the Los Angeles art community. With their upcoming installation piece, “the sound of wall”, they plan to display their penchant for inclusive playfulness, as well as their love of the strange and beautiful.

The piece itself is essentially a large wall mounted string instrument to which most standard technical titles both do and do not apply. The 7 section unit contains in total 111 strings, some strung properly and others prepared with a variety of objects. The object is amplified both electrically and naturally, and fills the roll of several traditional instrument variants.

Guests are welcome to interact with the piece. For the opening of the installation, (knee shy) will also perform a sound piece composed specifically for the piece in it’s current tuning. It’s sure to be full of 4 handed plucking, bowing, string piano, and other extended technique action.

The opening event for the piece is set for Friday February 5th. Along with the scheduled performance, sounds will be spun by: Lone Horn (aaron from the Horns of Happiness) and the Origami Vinyl crew. “the sound of wall” will be on exhibition and playable at Origami Vinyl from February 5th until April 5th, during normal store hours.

the sound of wall (1)

yesterday marked the beginning of actual physical work on "the sound of wall", an upcoming installation piece by (knee shy). the piece itself is a large multi-unit, wall mounted, 111 stringed electric/acoustic instrument. the first step was to acquire piano (which showed up early thursday evening). step 2 was to destroy the piano with a myriad of saws, hammers, and other destructive implements. this was super fucking fun and sounded great! we captured the death notes on a recorder, and will be doing something with that later. step 3: salvage the needed materials from the wreckage, and step 4 starts today, which is to start building "the sound of wall". here are a few photos the remains, which now fill the apartment.

fucking up the piano was great, and on top of that, we are able to supply parts for at least 2 physical art pieces ("the sound of wall" & a tribute piece to jazz pianist Hampton Hawes) + the recording. we have to get another one sometime, and go even further. "the sound of wall" is set to open fri. february 5th @ Origami Vinyl in echo park... we have work to do.

...is probably one of my favorite oldie-pop songs ever. it's also my current state of mind. j. shelley is already out there and for the past few weeks every moment and action has been devoted to the move.

we did find the time to have some fun, and throw down one last (knee shy) performance piece here in bloomington. we presented "no, thank you" at the open house for bloomington's new saving grace venue "the ritual room".

pulling an all dayer-all nighter-all dayer for this one... seventeen pieces in 3 days (more like 2) + work + the rest this bullshit day-to-day! no comment. just check out the show.

As a duo operating under the moniker (knee shy) this will be there last foray in Bloomington (at least for awhile). It might be a reinterpretation of haiku or an obsession with the number seventeen, or both? Call it what you will as “5 | 7 | 5” pins the above as the spool from which this collection is spun.
The body of work is seventeen pieces strong, and represented in a storm of mediums. Each work is constructed based on a haiku written in regards to the number seventeen. The “haiku” itself is presented along with the piece to allow the viewer a deeper reach into the full circle process synonymous with (knee shy)’s previous work.
The most direct past incarnation of this style of number play and relativity is probably (knee shy)’s “pardon our eleven fragile titles” collection from 2006. Wherein, the number eleven was put on the spot and squeezed for it’s value in a myriad of ways. including the fact of the collection being made up of eleven pieces and each piece being priced at $111.11.
In a user friendly path, the concept of “5 | 7 | 5” can be dissected in the following way:

haiku = 5 syllable line, 7 syllable line, 5 syllable line = 17 syllables |
haiku written in reflection of the significance of things concerning 17 |
17 pieces of art work created as a response to the haikus.

To place a piece as an example, the artist’s suggest this:

title: “17 year cicada year”
haiku:
“a cicada year
just enough time for a snack
could be late for work”
art piece: an hour glass filled with crushed cicada shells which runs for 17 seconds.

etc.

(knee shy)’s art work for this show involves a variety of forms including: silk screen, sculpture, prepared objects, audio, and an array of other constructs.

Ctrl+Alt+Design (seattle)

this is going to be great! (knee shy) has been invited to do an installation piece at this year’s JOIN design showcase in seattle! the event is titled Ctrl+Alt+Design, and it will focus on new american design(ers).
the pics from last years show are extremely taser factory, and featured work from seattle based design entities: iacoli & mcallister, ladies & gentlemen, graypants, submaterial, urbancase, and meet me here. this year they’re expanding to provide views from all over the country. we’re excited as fuck just to go, let alone actually be involved!
our piece is to be titled “onward?”. we are hoping to reflect the freshness of what is going on with the event, as well as where we are at...which seems to mix itself into our ideas more than ever recently. it looks solid on paper, and our excitement is growing as preparation and pre-work has begun!
we’ll bring back a flock of photos for sure!

kentucky derby celebration!
totally taser factory day party! shelley and i are both from kentucky, so the derby is like a holiday for us. + this year we had a rented 6 seat golf to drive around (similar to the one below)! the actual race was surprising too. what an upset!
afterwards we went out to the countryside to watch ponytail play an amazing set in somebody's yard.
